The CEO of Pfizer says a third vaccine dose will be needed as soon as six months after someone receives two shots – and then be vaccinated annually.

Albert Bourla says the potential booster shot will be given within twelve months of someone being fully vaccinated and it’s possible that some will need to immunized annually. The booster is aimed at protecting against future variants. About 144 volunteers will be given the third dose, mostly those who participated in the vaccine’s early-stage testing in the U-S last year.

Researchers still don’t know how long protection against the virus lasts once someone has been fully vaccinated.

Pfizer said earlier this month its COVID-19 vaccine was more than 91 percent effective in protecting against the virus and more than 95 percent against severe disease up to six months after the the second dose.

Last month, the National Institutes of Health started testing a new vaccine from Moderna designed to protect against the variant first found in South Africa.
