Ontario’s Associate Medical Officer of Health provided a grim COVID-19 update Thursday.

“Unfortunately, our situation is dire,” said Dr. Barbara Yaffe at the weekly COVID briefing. “Since our last update a week ago, Ontario has reported an additional 29,459 cases, that brings our seven day average of daily cases to 4,208 which is a 36 percent increase over last week’s seven day average.”

Dr.Yaffe says Ontario is reporting over 4,000 daily new cases for five of the last seven days, including Thursday’s new record high of 4,736.

She cautioned it’s likely the daily cases will remain high for the ”next while” and that the numbers in intensive care units will increase.

Currently there are 659 in ICUs.

Dr Yaffe’s warning comes as the Ford cabinet considers new restrictions to slow the surge of COVID-19.

Additional cases reported in Thursday’s provincial update include:

1,188 in Toronto
983 in Peel Region
526 in York Region
342 in Ottawa
216 in Durham Region
215 in Niagara Region
181 in Middlesex-London
150 in Hamilton
140 in Halton Region
118 in Simcoe-Muskoka
102 in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph
