While the governing PCs at Queen’s Park targeted older Canadians during the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, recent numbers show hundreds of thousands of Ontario residents who are 60 and older have yet to receive their first dose.

Doctor Samir Sinha is director of geriatrics at Sinai Health and the University Health Network.

He told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with guest host Jane Brown, it’s not because these individuals haven’t tried to get an appointment.

“Ninty percent of people who are 75 and older say they want a vaccine, but I keep hearing everyday about barriers people are facing or families are facing just trying to get their loved one a vaccine appointment and this is where we’re seeing a major gap and this is a gap that is sadly, going to be deadly,” Dr. Sinha explained.

Also speaking on the issue, Bioethicist Dr. Kerry Bowman says he’s seeing a shift in the media that the older people have had their chance (at getting a shot) and now we’ve moved on,” Dr. Bowman told Fight Back, “It seems it’s no longer about stopping death, it’s about trying to stop the pandemic, which he calls silo thinking and very dangerous.”

Dr. Sinha points out that 90 percent of third wave deaths are people 60 and over, even though that age group has made up just 15 percent of the cases since March 1st.
