If the current rate of transmission remains the same, the city of Toronto could be looking at approximately 2,500 daily cases of COVID-19 by the end of April, and if that rate has not changed, possibly over 6,000-a-day by June.
So says Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa, who told the Board of Health the projection is also based on vaccinations.
”As I’ve mentioned already now a couple of times, this is due to increased transmission, and increased severity associated with that B.1.1.7 variants of concern, which is now the dominant strain,” she told the board.
There are 1,282 new cases in Toronto of the 4,401 reported across Ontario.
De Villa says the city’s reporting a seven-day average of 941 cases; a 116% increase from three weeks ago.
The Board of Health also received data showing areas with some of the city’s highest case activity are areas that have some of the lowest rates of vaccination.
De Villa’s recommending the board urge the Ford government to prioritize vaccination registration for priority neighbourhoods.
