Calling the current COVID case counts ‘horrific’ Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health is urging the province to take further steps to protect residents.
Dr. Eileen de Villa along with the top doctors in Peel and Ottawa have sent a joint letter to provincial health officials asking for a stay-at-home order to curb the spread arguing the emergency brake won’t do enough.
“There’s no question that measures that promote distance, whether taken at a policy level or taken by us as individuals will help reduce transmission and importantly, not only will they help reduce transmission, they will also allow for vaccines to have their greatest effect.”
Dr. de Villa says lockdowns have been effective in other countries to control transmission while vaccines ramp up.
The letter also encourages the province to enforce travel restrictions between regions. The Ford government hasn’t publicly responded to the letter.
