It was 40-years ago today, former U.S. President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by a would-be assassin out to impress actress Jody Foster.
Reagan was shot in Washington as he returned to his limousine after speaking at a D.C. hotel.
Reagan was seriously wounded and close to death upon arrival at George Washington University Hospital. However, he made a full recovery.
Hinckley believed the attack would impress Foster, with whom he’d become obsessed.
Hinkley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and confined to a psychiatric facility. He was released in 2016.
Reagan died in 2004 at the age of 93.
