Ontario has announced it will spend $3.7M to help seniors and people with mobility issues get to a vaccination site. In making the announcement ahead of Wednesday’s provincial budget, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy says the government will “quite literally drive you to your vaccination” but was vague on details.

“This program will be working with transportation partners and so we’re working out the details but it’ll work with the numerous people already working to get seniors into their vaccine locations,” said the minister. “There are still one third of the people over 80 who haven’t been able to get vaccinated.”

Calling it a recovery budget, Premier Doug Ford says he won’t hesitate to spend what it takes to protect people.

“There are two aspects; protecting lives and protecting livelihoods making sure we think of the future when we open up the economy.”

Asked about concerns over delaying 2nd vaccine doses for four  months for seniors, Ford said this wouldn’t happen if they had enough vaccines.

Amid criticism that only 70 percent of Ontario seniors have been vaccinated, the province says of the 640,000 people 80 plus, 450,000 will be vaccinated by Tuesday night, and 125,000 appointments have been booked for this age group.

Ford and Minister Bethlenfalvy were speaking from a mass vaccination clinic in East York that opens Wednesday.
