Seniors at a Kitchener retirement home are sharing their life experiences and advice with the world, through the social media app TikTok. These emerging media stars and the woman behind the initiative that offers hope amid the pandemic are surprised BY the overwhelming response.

“I’m perfectly shocked, surprised,” says 92-year-old Mary Lang describing her sudden popularity on the popular video sharing platform. “Because I don’t know anything about the computer and how it works.”

The idea for the video series belongs to Nicole McNall, the senior lifestyle consultant at Highland Place Retirement Residence.

“The main purpose of these posts is to bring inspiration and advice through uncertain times,” said Nicole who came up with the idea during her recent maternity leave.

This video  of Mary commenting on her best age has attracted hundreds of comments.

“And I put it up on the app and it just kind of took off from there
and ever since then, she’s be receiving quite a bit of acknowledgment and attention,” said Nicole.

She asks residents a series of questions that are resonating with viewers such as what does it take to be happy, or what advice would you give your younger self.

Mary’s 93-year-old husband died nine months ago in hospital from COVID-19.

“I was married for 68 years and I had a very happy life.”

TikTok is the preferred video platform for much younger generations, but Mary and her senior friends are attracting people of all ages with their positive and uplifting life stories

“They aren’t quite sure what TikTok is all about but what they do know, is that the response has been really great,” adds Nicole.
