It’s a big day in Toronto, as three of the city’s nine mass immunization clinics open to deliver COVID-19 vaccines to those who’ve booked appointments.

(Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor John Tory are seen at a temporary COVID-19 vaccination site set up inside Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Jan. 17, 2020.)

Residents who are 80-plus get the first appointments, followed by candidates in other priority groups.

Public health staff are expecting to give first doses to some 450 people at each clinic each day to start with plans to ramp up doses as more vaccine supply arrives.

But about those priority groups, Premier Doug Ford says despite his own government’s vaccine priority list for phase two which includes massage therapists and chiropractors, he’s calling for the 80 and over crowd to finish first.

“We have 34 public health units, all king of going at a different pace, some are more efficient than others, but I encourage every public health unit, let’s make sure we get 80-plus over before we get to anyone else, and I’m sure if you went to a massage therapist and said, ‘do you have an elderly parent? Do you have grandparents? Are you going to give up your shot for your elderly mother or father over 80?’ I would say a hundred percent of the people no matter who they are, would say yes.”

In Toronto, the Metro Convention Centre, Scarborough Town Centre and Toronto Congress Centre will operate from 11am to 8pm, seven days a week.

Mayor John Tory announced on Monday that three more city-run clinics would be open by the beginning of April.
