After nearly a dozen European countries suspended use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine over concerns about blood clots, Justin Trudeau says the shot’s safe and Canadians should not be worried.
”Health Canada and our experts have spent an awful lot of time making sure every vaccine approved in Canada is both safe and effective,” said the prime minister.
”The best vaccine for you to take is the very first one that is offered to you.
That’s how we get through this as quickly as possible and as safely as possible.”
Trudeau adds health regulators in this country are ”following what has been happening with a specific batch used in Europe.”
However he points out none of the AstraZeneca doses sent here has come from that batch.
France and Germany have joined Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, Ireland and several other countries in suspending use of the vaccine.
The European Union’s medicines agency and AstraZeneca have said blood clots are not uncommon and there’s nothing to indicate the vaccine’s to blame.
The World Health Organization says in a statement that it’s ”carefully assessing the current reports related to the AstraZeneca vaccine.
As of today, there is no evidence that the incidents are caused by the vaccine and it is important that vaccination campaigns continue.”
