EMPLOYEES IN VACCINE CLINICS WILL BECOME "BOUNCERS" IF NO PROOF OF HEALTH CONDITIONS IS REQUIRED: HORWATH

There are concerns healthcare workers could become like bouncers if people with compromised immune systems don’t have proof of their conditions when they show up for a COVID-19 vaccine.

The provincial PCs at Queen’s Park have specified a list of health conditions that would be prioritized for the vaccine during Phase 2 of the rollout.

“A series of questions is asked at the booking stage to ensure that people who are most at risk, most in need, are getting the vaccine,” explained Solicitor General Sylvia Jones who along with Chief Medical Officer Doctor David Williams, admits there’s no system of verifying the information and preventing queue jumping.

This is leading to concerns from Opposition NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, that vaccination centre workers would become the enforcers.

“We wouldn’t want to expect those folks to become literally the bouncers, of scofflaws when it comes to the vaccine,” Horwath offered.

But others say providing proof is only going to slow down the vaccination process. Mayor John Tory said Wednesday, he feels line jumping is not going to become a big issues.

“The vast majority of people wouldn’t dream of breaking most of the laws we have…but there are a small group who do these kind of things but I think the majority will go along and just recognize we all get vaccinated as soon as possible,” Tory told CP24.

At the same time, 190,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine have arrived in the province, ahead of the start of a pilot project Friday at 330 pharmacies in Toronto, Kingston and Windsor offering the shot to people between the ages of 60 and 64.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says the list of pharmacies “should” be available Wednesday.
