After initially being in opposition, Germany’s independent vaccine committee has formally approved giving the AstraZeneca vaccine to those 65 and older.
The country’s changing its position based on new data from the U.K.
Researchers there say in preliminary findings that a single dose of either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine reduced the risk of hospitalization among those 70 and older by 80%.
Germany’s facing a third spike in infections, fuelled by the more contagious variant first detected in Britain.
Ontario seniors will not be getting the AstraZeneca vaccine as the government says it intends to follow advice from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI).
Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam has said the committee’s prepared to update its guidance as it sees more real world data.
