Ontario’s health minister is backing up the premier’s messaging on the delayed start of the online portal for COVID-19 vaccination appointment bookings.

Christine Elliott repeated on Thursday what Doug Ford said on Wednesday, that the system won’t be up and running until March 15th to ensure it doesn’t crash as it’s first being used.

“It has been tested as a pilot, but there’s more testing that we want to do so that as soon as it is available for those bookings that it’s going to be able to stand up to the number of calls and requests that we expect it to receive,” Elliott explained.

When the system opens for bookings, it will be available initially only to Ontario residents 80 and over.

Leading geriatrician Dr. Samir Sinha told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, it doesn’t make sense that younger Zoomers won’t get their shots until more than half way through the year.

“What troubles me most is that when people say wait a minute the government is saying that they’re going to be vaccinating older people, but it’s going to take until July, if you’re over 60, you’re going to start hearing about your opportunity in July,” Sinha explained.

Dr. Sinha says the province will actually have enough COVID vaccine supply before the end of April to give all 3.5 million Ontario residents 60 and older their first shot.

Dr. Sinha adds science clearly shows age should be the primary criteria for vaccinations since older people represent the vast majority of hospitalizations and related deaths from the virus.
