Tiger Woods is recovering at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after rods, pins and screws were inserted into the lower part of his right leg during orthopedic surgery following his rollover car crash in southern California Tuesday.

The 45 year old golf great has undergone emergency leg surgery after shattering the tibia and fibula in his right leg in multiple locations. Doctors say he also suffered additional injuries in his ankle and foot.

An overnight statement says Tiger was awake, responsive and recovering after the emergency operation.

L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputy Alex Gonzalez was the first on scene. He says he got to the SUV Tiger Woods was in and Woods was awake and talking.

“I asked him what his name was, he told me his name was Tiger and at that moment, I immediately recognized him,” Gonzalez explained, “I asked him if he knew where he was, what time of day just to make sure he was oriented. He seemed as though he was lucid and calm.”

Gonzalez says Woods was not worried about his injuries which could have been a sign of shock.

Investigators have not said what caused Tiger to hit a road sign, cross over a raised median and two oncoming lanes before toppling down an embankment, although police have said there is no evidence he was impaired.
