An online petition is asking for Cree to be added as a language option on the Google Translate app.

Statistics Canada figures show Cree is the largest Indigenous language group in Canada, with more than 96,000 speakers as of 2016.

The petition points out that Maori, the language of New Zealand’s Aboriginal people, is already available on Google Translate.

New Zealand government data suggests there are approximately 50,000 people that speak Maori.

Joseph John created the petition when he was working on his comic book ‘Citizen Canada’, whose titular hero is Indigenous.

John wanted some of the comic’s dialogue to be in Cree and took steps to create the petition when he realized Google Translate couldn’t help with the project.
