Nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime and about 1 in 4 will die from cancer.

Cancer remains the leading cause of death in this country as we mark World Cancer Day, which falls annually on February 4th.

In fact, we learned the other day that breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most common form of the disease, accounting for almost 12 percent of new cases every year around the world. The World Health Organization says obesity in women is a common risk factor and is driving overall cancer numbers.

The theme of this year’s World Cancer Day is “I Am and I Will”, as part of a 3-year campaign, with an emphasis on each of our abilities to take action to make lasting and positive change as part of a commitment to create a cancer free world.

Our own Libby Znaimer is a two time cancer survivor, of both breast and pancreatic cancer. As she does every year on World Cancer Day, Libby is hosting a special segment on advances in cancer treatment and how you can protect yourself against it on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back after the noon news. Libby’s cancer journey, Cancer Saved My Life, is told in a 60-minute documentary produced by Vision TV.

As an author’s note, I (Jane Brown) continue my advocacy in support of Bladder Cancer Canada, in memory of my mom Sandy, who died with bladder cancer in 2012. There have been many advances in bladder cancer diagnoses and treatment since then, but the fight for a cure continues.
