”He is doing so many things, at 94, that many people without dementia cannot do,” says the Manhattan neurologist who diagnosed Tony Bennett had Alzheimer’s in 2016.
”He really is the symbol of hope for someone with a cognitive disorder,” adds Dr. Gayatri Devi.
Bennett’s wife, Susan, and son Danny only now revealed the news in the latest edition of A-A-R-P (American Association of Retired Persons) The Magazine, which says the singing legend endures ”increasingly rarer moments of clarity and awareness.”
However, on the recommendation of his neurologist, Bennett still rehearses his 90-minute set with his longtime pianist twice-a-week, apparently singing with ease and perfect pitch.
”There’s a lot about him that I miss,” says his wife Susan.
”Because he’s not the only Tony anymore.  But when he sings, he’s the old Tony.”
Bennett first gained success in the early 1950s and enjoyed a comeback in the 1990s.
He continued recording and touring and his 2014 collaboration with Lady Gaga, ”Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga:  Check to Cheek” debuted at No. 1 on the charts.
A follow up was discussed, songs were recorded between 2018 and 2020 and that collaboration is being prepared for release this spring.
