Toronto Geritrician Dr. Nathan Stall calls it a breathtaking failure.

Only half of Ontario’s long term care home residents have received the COVID-19 vaccine prompting concerns among doctors that nursing home deaths from the second wave of the virus will eclipse those in the first wave.

More than 1400 long term care residents have died with since mid-September, in addition to the more than 1800 who died after contracting the virus in the Spring of 2020.

It’s been over a month since vaccinations began.

According to the latest figures from the provincial Progressive Conservatives, 48 percent of more the 72,000 long term care home residents have received a vaccination.

Dr. Stall says he cannot comprehend why the government would not move heaven and earth to vaccinate every single long term care resident as soon as possible.

And now on news that Canada won’t receive any doses of the Pfizer vaccine next week, other frontline healthcare workers are expressing concern.

“The fact that we’ve gone from one announcement that there would be a decrease to the fact that there is going to be none in the last week of January, for me does not bode well,” lamented Dr. Gerald Evans, infectious diseases expert at Kingston General Hospital who was a guest on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer.

“We have got to get vaccine into individuals who are at high risk for deaths for mortality, and that includes not just long term care residents but those out in the community, those over age 70 if you look at the case fatalities that have been reported,” Dr. Evans went on to say.

Dr. Evans added the reduction in supply of Pfizer vaccine is going to be “a substantial problem.” Listen to the full conversation by clicking here.

Premier Ford meantime, says the province hit it’s goal to have all nursing home residents, staff and caregivers in the COVID-19 hot spots vaccinated against the virus by Thursday January 21st, and promises the remainder will get their shots by the middle of February.
