A lot of disappointment is being expressed that Premier Doug Ford did not announce a plan Tuesday to ensure that essential workers receive legislated sick pay.

CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn points out many of his members are part time workers and “if they don’t have paid sick time, they don’t get paid, and if they don’t get paid, they can’t feed their children, they can’t pay their rent, and so they’re going to be more reluctant, if they have a sniffle, maybe they’ve just got to suck it up and go to work.”

Hahn is joined by others, including NDP leader Andrea Horvath, Toronto mayor John Tory, and Dr Michael Warner, head of critical care at Toronto’s Michael Garron Hospital, who are all calling for legislated paid sick leave to ensure people who may have COVID-19 are not going to work and spreading it to others.

“We know that essential workers, like factory workers and manufacturing workers, having to go to work while sick or waiting for their COVID test to come back, is a significant source of spread in the GTA. We can’t have the federal government and provincial government fighting over who should do it, the provincial government should just step up and make it happen,” Dr. Warner explained.

Dr. Warner will have more to say on this and other COVID-19 related issues as a guest Wednesday on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer between noon and 1pm.

In response, the premier is only saying his government is taking care of people and he doesn’t want to double up on efforts by the federal government.
