Schools in Southern Ontario will remain closed for in-person learning until January 25th while students in Northern Ontario return to class on Monday even though a lock down in that region has been extended until the 25th.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams is painting a bleak picture of community transmission in Ontario.

“Before Christmas, we said well we’re struggling we’re having 1,700 or 1,800 cases a day and we were very concerned about that,” remarked Dr. Williams. “Now we’re looking at every day over 3,500 and I’m concerned we may jump up to 4,000

New data suggests the COVID positivity rate among elementary aged children nearly tripled over the last month as cases surged across the province. The news comes on another record setting day of cases and deaths from COVID with over 35-hundred more cases and another 89 deaths, 32 of them long-term residents.

Sam Hammond, President of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation says delaying a return to the classroom is a ‘prudent decision’.

“But we’re also very concerned that this government continues because of their lack of planning, lack of supports in place and a delay in making decisions that in fact creates more chaos based on how they’re handling this whole file.”
