The good news is that half of Canadians followed the public health rules over the holiday period. But the bad news is that the other half decided to go against the public health guidance to only celebrate with household members.

A survey by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies found that while 50 per cent of respondents said they followed recommendations to stay home with household members, 48 per cent decided to go against the prescribed measure.

Public health experts and political leaders spent weeks ahead of the holidays pleading with Canadians to sharply limit their contacts during the holidays to avoid massive spikes in COVID-19 transmission.

As case numbers rise, the poll also suggests 62 per cent of those surveyed have little or no confidence that we will limit the spread of COVID-19 over the next few weeks.

But 87 per cent said they would support a total ban on international travel until there are several consecutive days of reduced numbers of COVID-19 cases.
