Request for more time denied.
The three-independent commissioners looking into the response to COVID-19 in Ontario’s long-term care homes had wanted their deadline extended until the end of 2021.
But the government has said no, that their work still has to be completed by the end of April.
In a letter to the long-term care minister early last month, the commission cited ”significant delays in obtaining government information central” to its work.
”We understand the rationale for completing the report as soon as possible.  We are however, writing to inform you that we will not have completed the investigation in time to deliver our report by the intended date,” the commissioners wrote.
Just before Christmas, Merrilee Fullerton responded that the extension request was denied, saying the government’s urgency of the situation has not changed, and that ”the need for timely and focused advice is even more acute.”
Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath, who’s accusing the premier and minister of trying to shut down the commission, has one question.
”What are they hiding?”
The NDP had called for an independent judicial public inquiry instead of the commission.
Currently, there are outbreaks in more than one-third of Ontario’s 626 nursing homes.
