All Ontario residents should know within a few weeks when they’ll be able to get immunized against COVID-19 as the province unveils its vaccine framework to determine who gets it first.
“That is work we’re actively engaged with at the prioritization sub group, thinking about which populations will be sequenced in what particular phase and over what time frame and we’re hoping to sort through those over the next number of weeks,” said
Dr. Dirk Huyer of the Ontario COVID task force.
Dr. Huyer says the first four groups to receive the vaccine between now and March include vulnerable seniors in congregate care settings, health care workers, First Nations, Metis and Inuit adults and those receiving home care for chronic conditions. He adds when it’s time for the general population, it won’t be broken down at the individual level but by category such as health care worker.
The principles listed in the framework include equity, fairness and transparency, and stress the need to protect those who face the greatest risk of serious illness and death due to biological, social, geographical, and occupational factors.

Some 50,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine are being transferred to Ontario Wednesday and Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe says vulnerable seniors will receive the first ones. The province has already announced that more than half of Ontarians, or about 8.5 million, should receive the vaccine by the end of July.
