Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has taken up a call by the Zoomers’ Advocacy Group CARP for Premier Doug Ford to fire his long term care minister and replace Merilee Fullerton with “someone
who understands the urgency and will fight for seniors.”

Andrea Horvath will have more to say when she joins Jane Brown on Zoomer Radio’s fight back with Libby Znaimer after Wednesday’s noon news.

CARP’s online petition at carp.ca calling for Fullerton’s removal is at nearly 4500 signatures.

But Fullerton is defending her government’s record and rejecting the need for her to be replaced.

“Our government is the first in Canada to create a minister of long term care. We are a brand new ministry. We have built it from scratch and COVID hit when we were only a few months into this, so I am absolutely dedicated to our most vulnerable people. That’s why I came into politics,” explained Dr. Fullerton.

Fullerton has been making the rounds, insisting that in one of the worst outbreaks at Tendercare Living in Scarborough, staffing is stable.

There have been 43 COVID related second wave deaths at Tendercare, where critics and family members protested a lack of action by the government to protect residents.

The outbreak at Tendercare Living is among 194 in Ontario long term care homes, 3 dozen more than a week ago.

In the first wave of COVID-19, 1,817 long term care residents in Ontario died after contracting COVID 19.

Since the middle of September, there have been 871 COVID-related deaths in the province’s nursing homes.
