Even though the daily COVID-19 number in this province has surpassed 2000 over the past 2 days, Peel Region’s medical officer of health says the current lockdown is working.

Doctor Lawrence Loh joined Jane Brown on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back.

He explained there is some optimism since projection numbers for the province before the lockdown pointed to as many as 6500 daily cases across Ontario by mid-December.

“Our cases in Peel have stayed relatively consistent over the past three weeks since entering lockdown, roughly in the 450 to 500 neighbourhood, and so I think that shows the measures have had an effect in reducing contact in our community and it has had an effect in helping to stop the growth of the pandemic in Peel,” Dr. Loh said.

Dr. Loh says most importantly over the coming holidays, and what will definitely make a positive difference, is to celebrate in person only with members of your household.

Meantime, both Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie and Toronto Mayor John Tory are both calling for stricter measures over Christmas and into the new year.

Mayor Crombie would like to see a GTA-wide lockdown since she says cellphone data shows there is evidence of people “region hopping” from the lockdown areas to regions where there are fewer restrictions to shop, dine out and visit family and friends.

As for Mayor Tory, he is advocating for further restrictions than what are already in place.

And a TDSB memo has gone out to parents of Toronto public school students, preparing them for the possibility of 2 weeks of online learning beyond the winter break which is scheduled to end January 4th.
