A new report   indicates there’s a substantial increase in the time and responsibilities of caregivers in Ontario amid the pandemic.

The annual SPOTLIGHT survey by the Ontario Caregiver Organization finds just over half of caregivers say it’s become more difficult to manage their responsibilities  with 31 percent providing more than 10 hours of care per week compared to 26 percent before the pandemic.

Not surprisingly, the pandemic has left many caregivers feeling lonely, isolated and depressed with nearly one third reporting they’re not coping well.

More than three-quarters are supporting someone with mental health challenges and finding it difficult to get the mental health support for their loved one.

Ontario has 3.3 million caregivers — family members, friends and neighbours who support someone with an illness, chronic disease or acute health care situation.
