When initial doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrive in Canada next week, after expected Health Canada approval, they will likely only be given to those who can go to one of the 14 delivery sites.
Canada’s chief public health officer says the plan is to move the vaccine as little as possible.
Dr. Theresa Tam concedes that’ll make it hard to vaccinate residents of long-term care as they cannot easily be moved to other sites.
”So that’s just the reality.”
Pfizer’s vaccine has to be stored at extremely cold temperatures with specialized boxes and equipment.
Dr. Tam’s hopeful that as everyone involved in the process becomes more experienced and comfortable transporting and administering the vaccine, things could change.
”I do think that’s a fluid situation,” adds Dr. Tam.
