There are now two long term care homes in the GTA that have been taken over by hospitals because of COVID-19 large scale outbreaks.
A statement from Ontario’s Long Term Care Ministry says management at Southlake Regional Health Centre is working with staff at King City Lodge Nursing Home, which has been dealing with an outbreak since November 7th. According to York Region Public Health, 28 of the 35 residents at the home were diagnosed with COVID-19. Seven of those residents have died.
In Whitby, management at Lakeridge Health is taking control of Sunnycrest Nursing Home, where there have been 133 cases of COVID-19 among residents and staff according to Durham Public Health. Three of the residents there have died with the virus.
Health Minister Christine Elliott calls this a very concerning situation.
As of Thursday, there were 116 COVID-19 outbreaks in Ontario nursing homes, up 5 from the day before.
In the first wave of COVID-19 1,817 nursing home residents died after contracting the virus. Since the middle of September, 436 additional nursing home residents have died with COVID-19.
The Zoomers’ Advocacy group CARP is calling on Premier Doug Ford to fire his long term care minister, Merilee Fullerton, for failing to protect long term care residents in the second wave. Add your name to the petition by clicking here.
