Lakeridge Health is moving in to take control of a Whitby nursing home, one of the first large COVID outbreaks to hit a Durham Region care home in the second wave.
There are 111 residents and 30 staff who’ve tested positive at Sunnycrest Nursing Home, a huge spike from just a week ago. According to government data, the number of deaths there is less than 5. “It is a very concerning situation,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott who used to represent the riding. “They have been working with the local hospital, Lakeridge that is going in and take over control on a voluntary basis, this is an agreement that has been reached with Sunnycrest to help get the situation under control. There are 116 outbreaks at Ontario nursing homes, that’s up 5 from Wednesday.
