A just-released report by the city confirms the huge economic impact of live music venues on Toronto.
The report shows music brings in $850M a year and provides over 10,000 full time jobs.
Mayor John Tory, who’s been promoting the city as a music hub for years, says the findings come at a critical time.
“We had issues, challenges facing the live music industry before the pandemic, some things mentioned earlier with respect to the redevelopment of the city and how that put pressure on and caused places to be closed,” said Tory.
Even before COVID-19, Toronto saw an alarming number of venues close their doors, due to rising rent and redevelopment. The two year study by Nordicity provides recommendations for supporting and re-building the sector post pandemic.
