As COVID-19 cases continue to spike in Ontario, the Ford government is forcing a pause in the re-opening plan for four weeks.

Saying community spread will likely mean spread in the schools, Health Minister Christine Elliott says pausing any further openings, and not expanding social circles now will help keep schools safe.

“The reality is that spread in the community will also likely mean spread in schools so we need to limit community spread as much as possible,” Elliott told reporters.

“That’s why we’re not proceeding with any further extension of any measures including any greater size of our social circles, any greater increases of people being able to go to sports events.”

Ontario is reporting 375 new cases of COVID-19 over the past two days, but no new deaths. No numbers were available yesterday because of the holiday.

Meantime, as many students returned to school today, Premier Doug Ford is pleading with parents to keep their children home if they’re sick and to get tested for COVID-19 if anyone in the home is feeling ill.

“If you’re worried you have COVID-19, or your worried a family member has it, please, go get tested and then self isolate,” Ford pleaded with Ontarians.

Ford says more than 37 million pieces of personal protective equipment have been delivered to school boards, including 19 million masks.
