If teachers follow health protocols, the risk of COVID-19 is low according to Ontario’s top doctor.

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams says educators are not at a higher risk of exposure that any other frontline worker .

“By doing what you need to do every time, all the time and being aware of that, you will not be at risk,” Dr. Williams said.

The teachers’ unions claim conditions are unsafe and are calling for smaller class size to ensure physical distancing at all times.

But Dr. Williams says that hundreds of thousands of doctors and different groups have weighed in on the back-to-school plan and determined it’s safe.

He was asked if he’d send his grandchildren back to school, and he was quick to say “Yes, I would.”

Speaking in Ottawa Thursday, Premier Doug Ford is repeating his his message to teachers to step up, like others have.

“We have incredible front line health care workers, PSW’s, doctors, nurses through the peak of the pandemic dealing with COVID-19 patients,” said Ford.

“We have truck drivers, manufacturers that are on production lines and now it’s time the teachers step up, everyone else has sacrificed.”
