Premier Doug Ford says the government is moving ahead ‘rapidly’ with legislation to mandate air conditioning inside long term care homes.

“I was in immediate contact with the minister of Long Term Care, she’s pulled out the legislation and we’re going to move forward with this,” Ford told reporters.

His comments come the day after Ford expressed shock upon learning that air conditioning is not mandated inside long term care homes.

“We are going to move forward with this.”

Meantime, after relatives of loved ones at Vista Care Community reported no air conditioning, the operators of the Woodbridge facility report that 18 air conditioning units will be installed by the end of the day.

Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath on Zoomer Radio’s “Fight Back with Libby Znaimer” that public shaming works in some cases, but there’s no across the board standard.

“Should it be left to the decision of an administrator or a board of directors as to whether or not these seniors are able to have a physical environment that’s not sweltering?’ questioned Horwath. “I think it should be up to a requirement.

Horwath says the NDP would immediately support such legislation.
