Doug Ford says it’s “ridiculous” that administrators at four Ottawa long-term care homes are telling relatives to stop coming to visit loved ones through the windows. The rule change comes as some outdoor visitors didn’t observe physical distancing.

“I’m trying to be politically correct, but that’s ridiculous. I don’t know who came up with this idea but they need to re-think it,” said Ford. The premier says this needs to change and added he’s grateful he can visit his mother-in-law at her Etobicoke facility. Ford urges those in Ottawa to visit their family adding he’d go to the window. Following  the Premier’s comment,  Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson says he’s ordered the city’s nursing homes to find a way to let family members visit loved ones through the windows again.

Meantime, Ontario is not yet setting dates for restarting the economy, but the province is providing guidelines to businesses for how to reopen safely. The 65 guidelines, found on the province’s website  outline how business owners can keep customers and staff safe  including controlling how many can enter, provide hand sanitizer, ground markings for physical distancing and installing plexiglass barriers.

Ford says Ontario’s made ”tremendous progress” in flattening the curve, and as soon as it’s safe to start reopening, he’ll do so as  quickly as possible but he’s ruled out opening some areas with lower COVID-19 cases, before others.
