A popular annual rite of spring in Toronto is still over a week away but this year, you’ll be watching the beautiful pink cherry blossoms on your computer screen.
Due to continued physical distancing amid COVID-19, Mayor John Tory says the city made the difficult decision based on entirely on the advice of public health officials. He says the park will be closed for the duration of the blooming season, typically two weeks beginning either late April or early May. “High Park had already been closed to vehicular traffic, and that will continue,” said Tory. He calls it yet another disappointment for residents who make the annual pilgrimage to the various Cherry Blossom sites including the most popular, High Park where crowds numbering in the hundreds show up for the spectacular show of blooms. Details of where people will be able to experience the blooms virtually will be released in the coming days.The fine for illegally entering High Park during the Cherry Blossom bloom period is $750.
Meantime, Mississauga is offering its residents a live feed of the Kariya park cherry blossoms online from now until the petals start to fall. visit
