Considered one of the most influential and renowned pianists in jazz history,  McCoy Tyner gained fame in the John Coltrane quartet before his lengthy solo career. He died Friday at his home in New Jersey. He was 81. While still in high school, Tyner began taking music theory lessons and by 16, he was playing professionally with a rhythm-and-blues band at house parties around Philadelphia and Atlantic City.
