There’s been a surge in the number of fake prints showing up online and art experts in Switzerland and the U.S. are warning novice art collectors. One Swedish art expert has been charged with selling hundreds of fake prints that he passed off as the work of Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and others over 10 years. Experts says since the advent of the internet, the problem has grown for a few reasons: it’s cheap, easy to create and difficult to detect a phony from the real deal because of increasingly sophisticated copies. The bottom line is buyer beware. Experts say the most prevalent fake prints are those falsely attributed to Lichtenstein and Warhol.
