One of the three winners of this year’s Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine says learning he had won the award felt a bit surreal. Dr. William Kaelin of Harvard university says he was awoken by an early morning call and almost had an out of body experience. Kaelin and two other scientists won the prize for discovering the mechanisms by which cells sense oxygen levels and respond to fluctuations. The Nobel Committee says their work has paved the way for new strategies to fight anemia, cancer and other diseases.
