A new poll shows that the environment is top of mind for Canadians as they get set for this fall’s federal election.

The Forum Research survey found that 26% of those polled said that the environment was the most important issue in the federal election campaign.

Second was the economy with 25%saying Canada’s economic future was their top concern.

16% said health care was their main issue as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research, says this is quite a shift given the economy usually tops the list followed by health.

Bozinoff tells The Star that the biggest factor affecting people’s shift to towards the environment is likely the increasing frequency of extreme weather events such as wildfires and the flooding seen this spring in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.
