A couple of Canadians are celebrating Oscar wins. Toronto-raised director Domee Shi won her first Academy Award for her animated short film Bao. Shi wrote and directed the eight-minute Pixar production set in Toronto. It’s also the first Pixar short directed by a woman. And Toronto-born Paul Massey won for his sound-mixing work on Bohemian Rhapsody, which won four awards including best actor for Rami Malek’s role as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. The night’s big award went to Green Book for best movie. The segregation-era road-trip drama premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival starring Vigo Mortensen who’s currently filming a movie in Toronto. The night’s other winners were Olivia Colman for best actress, Mahershala Ali for best supporting actor and Regina King won best supporting actress.
