LIONEL GELBER BOOK PRIZE SHORT LIST

Books that explore the emergence of a new China, the manipulative goals of Russia, and the end of post-war democracy are on the short list for the Lionel Gelber Prize. Founded in 1989 by Canadian diplomat Lionel Gelber, the $15,000 award honours non-fiction books in English on foreign affairs that seek “to deepen public debate on significant international issues.” The are five titles being considered for the prize presented February 26th at the University of Toronto.

The list:

1. No Turning Back: Life, Loss, and Hope in Wartime Syria by Rania Abouzeid
2. The Third Revolution: Xi Jinping and the New Chinese State by Elizabeth C. Economy
3. How Democracies Die by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt
4. The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America by Timothy Snyder
5. Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World by Adam Tooze
