Toronto is getting a much-needed boost from Ottawa to help ease the pressure on the city’s shelter system.

The federal government announced $15-million in funding to help address the acute temporary housing shortages in Toronto.

Mayor John Tory issued a statement thanking Ottawa for providing the funds as the city continues to help refugee claimants and asylum seekers.

“I want to thank the Government of Canada for providing this additional and immediate financial assistance in response to the City’s request. We are working to help refugee claimants and asylum seekers who arrive in Toronto, but we have been clear that we cannot do this alone. We will continue to work with the federal and provincial governments to help address this ongoing issue”.

However, Ontario’s Minister for Children, Community and Social Services, Lisa McLeod called the money from Ottawa “inadequate” adding that along with $11-million announced back in June, this money doesn’t even begin to cover the $200-million debt Ontario has been burdened with due to illegal border crossings.
