If you don’t have to be on the roads today, stay home! That’s the message from police and city officials as the GTA and much of Southern Ontario are getting hit with a double blast of winter this weekend – snow and frigid temperatures. Toronto could get 8 to 10 centimeters of the white stuff but other areas will get more. Up to 25 centimeters is expected to fall in the Hamilton area, and windy conditions will bring visibility to near zero. Toronto’s superintendent of road operations Mark Mills says the city is ready with 200 salters, 600 plows and 300 sidewalk cleaners. Police are reminding motorists to be extra careful on the roads and to slow down. The storm is expected to wind down Sunday morning but the bitterly cold temperatures will last into Monday with wind chill values expected to plummet into the minus 20 to minus 30 range over the next 72 hours. There are nine 24-hour respite centres operating in the city.
