Fire code changes are coming in the new year for long term care homes in the province.
Retirement and long term care homes are now required to have automatic sprinkler systems. The change in law comes after years of lobbying and several deadly fires including one in a Mississauga in 1980 that killed 25 seniors. A 1995 fire also in Mississauga killed eight seniors. Deputy Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop says homes built before 1997 have been given five years to do the retro-fit and fire crews will be out checking for compliance in the first week of January.
