As Toronto grapples with the effectiveness of Vision Zero, New York City is celebrating the success of its road safety plan. The number of annual traffic fatalities in NYC is on course to fall below 200 for the first time in a century. One New York neighbourhood is also beefing up its road safety plan by hiring crossing guards for adults. In Toronto, 47 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed on city streets so far this year, more than any single year in the police database going back to 2007. Despite the numbers, Toronto Mayor John Tory says he’s committed to the road safety plan with the goal of reducing deaths to zero. Road safety experts in Toronto claim the city has failed to invest in real change and instead are relying on behavioural changes of road users. They say reducing speed limits on all streets is effective, not just in certain zones. Toronto is spending $100 million toward its Vision Zero plan and NYC is spending over $1.6 billion.
