Mayoral candidate Jennifer Keesmaat wants to transform the city’s golf courses.

Keesmaat held a news conference Monday morning announcing her plan to turn some of the city-owned courses into year-round public spaces.

“The usage has been declining.  They’re operating at a subsidy and net loss in our city and we should be looking to the future and proposing uses that create spaces for everyone in our city.” said Keesmaat during the conference at the Rouge National Urban Park.

The mayoral hopeful said rather than spending the nearly $10-million set aside to improve the city’s golf courses, the courses should be turned into community hubs that could include parkland, community centres, sports fields or arts and culture centres.

Keesmaat said she would consult local community members to see what they feel would benefit them most.
