As promised, the new PC government at Queens Park is blowing up the former Liberal government plan to sell recreational marijuana through a publicly owned store and today, outlined its own plan. The province will sell pot through an online retail channel when it becomes legal this fall and allow private retail stores to sell pot early next year. The Tory government is reversing course on the previous plan by the Liberals to have legalized cannabis distributed through LCBO. Attorney General Caroline Mulroney says municipalities can opt out of hosting any pot shops within their boundaries. In addition, the legal age to buy recreational cannabis will remain 19. Private retailers will have to follow a series of rules including prohibiting the sale of marijuana to anyone under the age of 19. Anyone caught violating the rules will face severe fines. The province says a “tightly regulated” private retail model will start operation by April 1, 2019.
