An explosion and fire in a hydro station in northwest Toronto left thousands of residents without power early Saturday.

It happened just after midnight in a transformer station in North York near Finch Avenue and Signet Drive.

Toronto Fire says when crews arrived, the facility was fuly engulfed.

It was made more difficult because the complex was far from any hydrants.

Flames and smoke could be seen for miles at the height of the spectacular fire.

A section of Highway 400 and of Finch Avenue were shut down while firefighters tackled the blaze.

About 7-thousand Hydro customers were without power in the Dufferin – Steeles ares.
