New remedies are being developed for millions of people who suffer from sleep apnea. That’s when people stop breathing during sleep, then wake up with loud gasping and snoring. They are more likely than others to have strokes, heart attacks and heart rhythm problems, and they’re more likely to die prematurely. Airway pressure masks are the most common therapy, but many people won’t use them because of the discomfort and inconvenience, so experts are now looking at everything from mouthpieces to surgical implants. So far, no pills for sleep apnea exist, but researchers are working on it. One drug containing THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, showed promise in a study this year.
