Sunday’s 5 K “Bum Run” is held each year to raise awareness about colon cancer and promote screening.

Gastroenterologist Doctor Ian Bookman of St. Joseph’s Health Centre founded the run to highlight the fact that screening can prevent up to 90 percent of deaths from colon cancer.

Dr. Bookman says if there’s family history of colon cancer, people should get screened starting at age 40 and at 50 with no family history. All the money raised from Sunday’s event will go to several colon cancer charities.
